If bad weather prevents the planting of newly-delivered shrubs, undo and stand them in a dry shed, until the weather breaks, covering their roots with sacking or straw, which must be kept damp.
Finish all hedge trimming of privet and others, while the growth is sappy and soft. The work is eased if the blades are kept sharp from time to time and this gives the gardener an excuse for taking a little light refreshment!!
A light well-ventilated greenhouse, with a day temperature of 13°C. (55°F.), falling to 6°C. (10°F.) to 7°C. (45°F.) at night, will suit the majority of plants. Slight ventilation may be given from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on sunny days to prevent overheating, because a late October sun can be hotter than you think through glass.
Chrysanthemum stools of ‘earlies’ that are in a frame should be cleaned up and leaves or branches of doubtful health removed and burnt, because diseases need to be kept at bay. This is a good time to root another batch of perpetual carnations.
Gradually cut down the water supply to fuchsias without letting them go dry, and treat the cyclamen to fortnightly feeds of weak liquid manure.

Store potatoes in a dark, well-ventilated frost-proof place, remembering that stored in heat they will begin to grow and sprout.
Lettuce, round-seeded peas and broad beans can be sown under cloches on a site that was manured for the previous crop.
It’s a good idea to inspect the onions, particularly the whoppers.
Remember to limit the basal shoots of raspberries to 8 canes a plant. Prune and discipline all wall-trained trees.
